Fashion of Dating

This blog is fitting for the time it will be posted, because it will be the day after my wedding! Both Michael (my husband) and I love fashion. His style was one of the first things that attracted me to him in the beginning of our relationship.

Fashion gives individuality to couples who are dating and helps people to seek partners who’s overall style might attract them. People use their clothes and accessories to accentuate their personalities and express their moods. While dating, we seek to give good first impressions and dress the way in which we wish to be perceived by our partner. This can include wearing certain clothes to appear more confident, attractive, or sexy. Animals do this as well through the process of mate selection. For example, a peacock shows off its feathers to attract a partner.

According to research on color psychology, red is generally perceived as the most attractive color on women by men, and since it elicit’s positive reactions, it often makes women feel sexier and more confident to wear! There was an experiment conducted showing that men tipped waitresses wearing red more than the waitresses not wearing red. Additionally, more research shows that men are more willing to approach women who wear the color red.

Further studies show that women who are dating generally try to show off their physiques by utilizing fashion to highlight the physical features that they feel good about and hide the features that make them self-conscious. Also, men generally like to wear tighter clothes to show off muscles and look more masculine, as compared to wearing baggy clothes. Men also notice a woman’s sense of style on a first date, but women notice men’s faces, smiles, and eyes. To show a sense of financial stability, men like to wear leather goods or luxury watches that show a type of status and willingness to provide.

When trying to decide what to wear on a first date, consider wearing something that you have worn before, such as an outfit that makes you feel the most flattering and comfortable. This will help you to feel less anxious on a first date, and it will also show your date what your true style is like! Black is generally a safe color to wear, since it is usually considered to be flattering on everyone; however, look at my color psychology blog to know more about what other colors might be more suitable depending on the mood you would like to display.

Now that you know these interesting facts about fashion and dating, you can become more aware of your own style and the style of your partner! It’s helpful to know a little more about the fashion psychology behind these important life events, so that you may feel more comfortable and confident in your wardrobe choices.
