Little Black Dress

No matter the trend or decade, the color black is always the chicest in the world of fashion and never goes out of style. So, why is this the case? Originally designed by Coco Chanel, the little black dress was created to give people of all socioeconomic classes a stylish go-to for any event, making one appear classy and elegant. The idea behind the little black dress was to give a wide range of consumers access to a stylish look adaptable to any situation, leaving no one behind. Chanel originally created a little black dress for both day and night, a long-sleeved woolen dress for the day and velvet or satin dress for night.

The color black has consistently been so timeless, that even when Hollywood released its first films made in color, black dresses were still preferred by the stars. Wearing a little black dress shows others that you know how to dress for the occasion. While the color black has another meaning for sports, perceived as a color for aggression, in the fashion industry, the color black is always chic.

As discussed in my blog about mood, some people wear certain colors to hide features that they dislike about themselves. Wearing the color black can camouflage you in a crowd, or disguise newly gained weight. If you are having a negative, emotional day, try wearing black. You will draw less attention to yourself but also look stylish at the same time. For some introverts, this is the best of both worlds!

The color black is also associated with mourning. And while black is one of the favored colors to wear among many, editor and chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour dislikes wearing the color black. Wintour gave an interview about a year ago explaining that wearing all black is too gloomy and reminds her of a funeral. This explains color psychology and the subjective ways in which people feel about certain colors depending on what the colors mean or symbolize. Wintour advised never wearing all black to a job interview.

I love wearing all black when I want to feel stylish, but also when I feel bad and want to stay hidden from the world. About a year ago my entire wardrobe was black. I reflect on that and realize it was because I went through a really difficult time with my health, and black was the color that made me feel best. I think it was because I felt so bad about myself and this helped me to feel less noticed by others. While I am working on shifting my wardrobe to be more colorful, I still love an all black outfit every now and then. Always chic and always in style. What are your thoughts about wearing all black?
